How to rename shipping rates in Shopify checkout

Change the shipping method name customers see at Shopify checkout: edit the rate, rename carrier-calculated rates, and show a different name per country, cart or customer.

Shopify checkout where the rate Standard is renamed to Standard delivery, 3 to 5 working days

The shipping method name is the last piece of copy a customer reads before paying. "Standard" tells them nothing. "Standard delivery, 3 to 5 working days" answers the question they were about to email you. Shopify lets you rename rates you create yourself, but carrier-calculated rates and per-country wording need a different route. Here is each option.

Rename a flat rate you created

Settings → Shipping and delivery, open the profile, find the rate in its zone and click Edit. The Rate name field is what the customer sees. Keep it under about 40 characters so it does not wrap on mobile, and put the delivery promise in it: Express, next working day, Collect in store, ready in 2 hours.

Shopify also provides a Custom delivery description on some rates, shown in smaller text under the name. Use it for cut-off times and exclusions. Both fields are static: the same wording shows to every customer in that zone.

Why carrier rates cannot be renamed natively

Carrier-calculated rates (UPS, FedEx, DHL, Canada Post, Australia Post and third-party rate apps) arrive with the carrier's own service name, such as UPS® Ground or FedEx 2Day®. The shipping settings only let you add a markup or exclude a service. The name itself is not editable, so you cannot show Economy (5 to 7 days) instead of UPS® Ground.

Rename at checkout with a rule

A delivery customization built on Shopify Functions can rename any delivery option, including carrier rates, at the moment checkout displays it. In Shipzo the Rename action takes the new title and optional placeholders for the original name, the price and the destination country, and shows a preview of what the customer will see.

Same rate, different wording per country. Carrier prefixes are kept so the carrier's branding rules are respected.
  • Rename Standard to Standard delivery, 3 to 5 working days when country is United Kingdom, and to Standard delivery, 5 to 8 working days when country is any of Germany, France, Spain.
  • Rename UPS® Ground to UPS® Ground, arrives in 2 to 5 days for every cart. The carrier prefix stays in place.
  • Rename Express to Express, order by 2 pm for same-day dispatch on weekdays before 14:00, and to Express, dispatched next working day after the cut-off. See the same approach for hiding same-day after a cut-off.
  • Rename Standard to Free standard delivery when cart subtotal is at least 75, paired with the free shipping rule from the free shipping guide.

Setting up a rename rule

  1. 1Install Shipzo and click Create rule.
  2. 2Action: Rename. Methods: choose the rate from your live list, carrier rates included.
  3. 3Type the new name. Click Insert current name, Insert price or Insert country to add placeholders. The preview updates as you type.
  4. 4Conditions: add Country is United Kingdom or leave empty for all carts.
  5. 5Save and activate and open checkout with a UK address.

Rename, reorder, or both

A renamed rate is often also the rate you want chosen. The same rule can tick Move → Top so the renamed option is listed first and preselected. You can also sort every method by price or by title, which matters when a carrier returns six services in an unhelpful order.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the shipping method name in Shopify?+

For rates you created, edit the rate in Settings → Shipping and delivery and change the rate name. For carrier-calculated rates, or for a different name per country or cart, use a delivery customization such as Shipzo's Rename action.

Can I rename UPS, FedEx or DHL rates in Shopify?+

Not in the shipping settings. A Shopify Functions delivery customization can rename them at checkout. Shipzo keeps the carrier prefix so the carrier's naming rules are respected.

Can the shipping rate name be different per country?+

Yes, with a rule per country or a placeholder that inserts the destination country into the name.

Does renaming a rate change its price or the carrier label on the order?+

No. The price and the underlying rate are unchanged. Only the title shown to the customer at checkout and on the order is different.
